Isabella of Castile

Isabella of Castile
(1451–1504)
   Monarch.
Isabella was the daughter of John II, King of Castile, and she married ferdinand, heir to the throne of Aragon. She became Queen of Castile in her own right in 1474. Although the two countries remained separate, she and her husband became known as the ‘Catholic Sovereigns’ and did much to unite Spain. A woman of real personal piety, in the history of the Church she is remembered for instigating the Inquisition in Spain in 1478, for expelling the Jews in 1492 and the Muslims in 1502 and for supporting Archbishop ximénez, her confessor, in his reforms. She also encouraged Christopher Columbus in his explorations and supported las casas in his efforts to convert the Indians of the New World.
